If your DPF warning light has appeared, your car has dropped into limp mode or a garage has told you that the diesel particulate filter is blocked, one of the first questions is usually:

How much is this going to cost?

Search for DPF cleaning in Leeds and you will find a wide range of prices. That is partly because the phrase “DPF cleaning” can describe several very different services.

A forced regeneration, a basic chemical treatment, an off-car clean and a diagnosis-led mobile DPF service are not the same job.

That is why comparing DPF prices solely on the headline figure can be misleading.

At DPF-PRO, our approach is to find out why the DPF has become blocked before deciding whether cleaning is actually the correct solution.

How much does DPF cleaning cost in Leeds?

DPF cleaning prices vary considerably depending on the type of service being provided.

Some services are essentially a forced regeneration. Others involve removing the DPF from the vehicle and cleaning it separately. Mobile services may carry out diagnosis and cleaning at your home or workplace.

DPF-PRO’s standard mobile service is £360 including VAT. For eligible Leeds appointments booked online, we are currently testing a 10% online-booking discount, reducing the total to £324 including VAT.

The price is structured as:

£150 — mobile call-out, diagnosis and assessment

This secures your booking and allows our technician to assess the vehicle, examine the DPF system and determine whether cleaning is appropriate.

If cleaning is required:

Standard booking: £210 remaining balance following the DPF cleaning.

Leeds online booking offer: £174 remaining balance following the DPF cleaning, making the discounted total £324 including VAT.

This brings the complete service price to £360 including VAT.

The important difference is that we do not simply arrive and assume that every DPF warning light means the filter needs cleaning.

Why can DPF cleaning prices vary so much?

There are several different services commonly advertised as “DPF cleaning”.

Forced regeneration

A forced regeneration uses diagnostic equipment to instruct the vehicle to attempt a regeneration.

This can sometimes work when soot loading is relatively low and the vehicle has no underlying fault preventing regeneration.

However, if there is a sensor problem, temperature issue, EGR fault, airflow problem or another engine-management fault, simply forcing another regeneration may not solve the cause.

On-car DPF cleaning

An on-car cleaning process treats the DPF while it remains fitted to the vehicle.

This can be very effective when the filter is suitable for cleaning, particularly where soot loading has reached a level at which normal regeneration is struggling.

But again, the important question is why the DPF became blocked.

Off-car DPF cleaning

Some workshops remove the DPF completely and clean it using specialist equipment.

This can be appropriate for heavily contaminated filters, higher-mileage filters containing significant ash or situations where an on-car process is unsuitable.

Removal and refitting labour can significantly affect the overall cost.

DPF replacement

Replacement should normally be considered where the filter is physically damaged, internally deteriorated or no longer capable of being restored effectively.

A DPF warning light on its own does not prove that the filter needs replacing.

Correct diagnosis should come first.

Why diagnosis matters before DPF cleaning

A blocked DPF is often the result of another problem rather than the original fault.

For example, the DPF may repeatedly block because the engine is not achieving the conditions required for successful regeneration.

Possible contributing factors can include temperature-related problems, pressure-sensor faults, exhaust temperature sensors, airflow or boost issues, EGR problems, combustion faults or repeated short journeys.

If the cause is not identified, the DPF can simply begin filling again after it has been cleaned.

That is why DPF-PRO technicians use diagnostic information and vehicle data as part of the assessment before deciding on the correct course of action.

The objective is not simply:

“Can we clean this DPF?”

The better question is:

“Why has this DPF become blocked, and what does this vehicle actually need?”

Does a DPF warning light always mean the filter needs cleaning?

No.

A warning light tells you that the vehicle’s control system has detected a problem.

The DPF may genuinely contain excessive soot, but there are other possibilities. A sensor may be giving incorrect information, the vehicle may have repeatedly failed to regenerate, or another engine or emissions fault may be preventing regeneration from taking place.

This is why replacing or cleaning parts purely because a warning light has appeared can become expensive very quickly.

Diagnosis should determine the next step.

Read our DPF warning light in Leeds guide for more detail.

What if the car is already in limp mode?

Limp mode is the vehicle protecting itself because the engine-management system has detected a fault serious enough to restrict performance.

A heavily restricted DPF can be one cause, but it is not the only cause.

If your diesel has suddenly lost power or entered limp mode, avoid assuming that a DPF clean will automatically fix it.

Our guide to DPF limp mode and what to do next explains this in more detail.

Will driving on the motorway clear the DPF?

Sometimes a longer drive can help the vehicle complete a normal regeneration.

But this generally only applies when the vehicle is capable of regenerating correctly in the first place.

If regeneration is being prevented by a fault or soot loading has already become excessive, driving further may achieve very little.

Drivers around Leeds frequently move between short urban journeys and routes such as the M621, A64 and surrounding motorway network, but simply reaching motorway speed does not guarantee a blocked DPF will regenerate.

See our guide to when a motorway drive may help a blocked DPF.

Why DPFs often block again after cleaning

One of the most frustrating situations for a diesel owner is paying for a DPF clean only for the warning light to return.

That usually means the blockage was treated but the reason it occurred was not fully resolved.

For example, imagine the engine cannot reach the correct operating temperature. The vehicle repeatedly attempts to regenerate but cannot successfully complete the process. Eventually the DPF becomes overloaded.

Cleaning the DPF may restore the filter, but unless the temperature problem is corrected the cycle can begin again.

The same principle applies to many sensor, airflow, EGR and combustion problems.

Mobile DPF diagnosis and cleaning in Leeds

DPF-PRO can attend vehicles at homes and workplaces across Leeds.

Our mobile approach means you do not necessarily need to arrange recovery or leave the vehicle at a workshop before the DPF system can be assessed.

Typical symptoms we investigate include DPF warning lights, engine-management lights, loss of power, limp mode, failed regenerations and DPF problems that repeatedly return after previous cleaning.

The technician assesses the vehicle before deciding whether cleaning is appropriate.

If the DPF does not need cleaning, the objective becomes identifying what does need attention instead.

Is DPF cleaning cheaper than replacing the filter?

In many cases, substantially so.

But this is only useful if the existing DPF is suitable for cleaning.

Replacing a serviceable DPF because a warning light has appeared can be an unnecessary expense. Equally, repeatedly cleaning a damaged or unsuitable filter is not sensible either.

The correct decision comes from assessing the condition of the DPF and the vehicle systems controlling it.

So what should a Leeds driver do first?

If your DPF warning light has appeared, the vehicle has entered limp mode or regeneration keeps failing, start with diagnosis rather than guessing.

DPF-PRO provides mobile DPF assessment and cleaning across Leeds.

Our standard complete mobile service is £360 including VAT. For eligible Leeds appointments booked online, the current 10% online-booking offer reduces this to £324 including VAT:

£150 for the booking, call-out, diagnosis and assessment

followed by

Standard booking: £210 if DPF cleaning proceeds.

Eligible Leeds online booking: £174 if DPF cleaning proceeds, giving a £324 total.

You can arrange a mobile assessment at your home or workplace through our Mobile DPF Cleaning in Leeds page or call 0333 772 3689.

The objective is simple: determine what is actually wrong with the vehicle before money is spent on the wrong solution.
